Course Format: Tutorial (Bi-Weekly Meetings, 8 Sessions Total)
Time: Tuesdays, 9am to 10:15am
Dates: Sept 1 to December 15, 2026
Location: Carman 120
Course Description
This tutorial explores how artificial intelligence shapes, alters, and redefines human communication. From automated text generation and predictive algorithms to synthetic media and algorithmic interfaces, we will examine the social, cultural, and political dimensions of AI systems. Through critical reading, analytical writing, hands-on software experiments (“vibe coding”), and interactive prototyping, students will develop both theoretical frameworks and practical skills to critique and build human-AI communication environments.
Course Learning Objectives
• Analyze the political economy, ethical implications, and cultural impacts of generative AI and algorithmic communication.
• Evaluate how human language, expression, and agency adapt in response to synthetic media and predictive text systems.
• Prototype creative and critical interactive software using accessible AI coding workflows and design tools.
- Articulate original research and design concepts through academic writing and iterative project defense.
Required Course Assignments
• Assignment 1: Critical AI Analysis Paper (30%) A 1,500–2,000 word academic essay analyzing a specific automated communication system or algorithmic platform. You will evaluate its technical mechanics, structural biases, and implications for human discourse.
• Assignment 2: “Vibe Coding” Interactive Project (30%) A functional interactive web app or soft-hardware experiment built using natural language coding workflows (e.g., Cursor, Claude, p5.js, or HTML/JS generation). The project must subvert, illuminate, or critique an aspect of automated interaction.
• Assignment 3: Figma AI App Prototype & Final Defense (30%) A fully interactive, high-fidelity App prototype created in Figma that incorporates generative AI features or addresses human-AI communication. Accompanied by a 5-minute presentation and pitch deck.
• Tutorial Participation & Prep (10%) Active engagement during bi-weekly deep-dive discussions, completion of assigned readings, and presentation of work-in-progress drafts.
